Charcoal and Pencil Sketch

I started this sketch a week ago – if you popped by to read the previous post you may recall seeing the beginning of it.  It’s a double page spread in my practise journal and I worked on it most evenings, often erasing lines as often as I sketched them.  I didn’t use any reference photos and it shows – and I changed my mind about which quote to use at the last minute…… And of course I’d do it very differently if I decided to make a painting…. 

……… but it was a good exercise and a chance to work through some of the emotions I was feeling.

I’m hoping that next post I can return to plump teddy bears and other things that got themselves doodled, drawn, coloured or painted this month.

  4. It’s a wonderfully powerful picture. I especially like the way the sun catcher spread its colors lightly along the drawing. It seemed to remind me that even at the darkest moments there will be healing light—a light of hope.

    • Lovely thoughts SS, as I’ve said before it is often difficult to take photos in this house without a sparkle making its presence known – this was a particularly persistent rainbow, intent on leaving it’s message. I’m a bit slow, but you guys helped me get there 🙂

  5. The remembrance ceremony from Christchurch was an example of a community that is genuine, tolerant and caring. If only the world was more like New Zealand.

  7. Teddy bears are lovely and all but this has raw emotion and the little bit of color says that somewhere down the road will be some healing for all. You have a good and huge heart, Pauline. Thank you for sharing yourself with us.

    I know that feeling of helplessness in the face of such a tragedy. As individuals, we do the best we can to work through our emotions. I find such release in writing poetry.

  16. This is wonderful, Pauline. You’ve captured so much emotion. And I love the quote you chose. It’s perfect. What a remarkable and compassionate Prime Minister you have. She is a leader in the true sense of the word.
