The Shrinking Work Space

So, let’s share.

I like to have a place for everything and everything in it’s place.  Which is why the etui doll Ms Petui Buttonbottom came into being……..  Remember her?  She is a complete joy to me, everything I need is right there at my side, right when I need it

sdrMy working yarn is well organised.  All the relevant yarn, tools and patterns are stored in the large blue bag and the yarn being used is in the green bag, which feeds me up to three 200g balls at a timesdrMy tiny house is always tidy even though it is quite colourful – well, blue really – and no photo is complete without Siddy photo-bombing itimg_20180719_110510-effectsWhen I’m working in the kitchen, I clean up as I go.  There is never a pile of dishes waiting to be done.  When I get up the bedroom is left as good as a new one before I have first coffee.  I know it sounds awfully anal, but I’m a Virgo and I blame it all on that.  I also have an analytical mind even though I am, as many of you know, just a little on the whoopsie side……..  Doesn’t the mention of astrological sign prove that?  As further proof I offer my latest reading matter:

Image result for the placebo effect joe dispenzaI’m currently reading Dr Joe Dispenza’s   ‘You Are the Placebo’ and loving it.  I love him anyway.  He first arrived in my life about ten years ago and had a huge impact.  He is very important in educating us on how we can help heal ourselves, how we can change our thinking, how we can make our lives better – which many regard as more than a little whoopsie – but he is a scientist and brings his groundbreaking scientific research with him and that is what makes the difference for me.   (If you don’t know of him there are tons of You Tube videos you can use as an introduction, he has his own channel too).  He’s my personal hero.

But, I digress……..  Let’s get on with the point of this post.

I am so fortunate, these days I have a whole play-room, my happy place, a place where I make stuff for hours and days on end, all to myself.  My work room is well organised, but being a crafter one necessarily makes a mess when working.  Crafter’s have this thing going on where they start out with oodles of space to work in and by the time the project is finished they are working in ten square centimetres and even that is under attack

A few hours later it looks like thissdrTim Holtz came up with his mixed media glass mat, supposed, amongst other things, to ensure that we have about 60 x 30 cm of unimpingeable working space.  It sounds great, and while I don’t know for sure as I don’t have one (if you have one, I’d like to hear your views) I have a feeling it wouldn’t stop me doing thisdavI’d just scooped up a pile of pens and pencils before taking that quick shot, I’m sorry you missed seeing the real chaos  🙂  I am working on the card in the bottom right hand corner, the piece of A4 scrap paper is the remaining available working area.  Try as I might, as the work proceeds the actual working space gets smaller and smaller and I have a plaintive thought – does everyone end up like this?

And this is just making a few cards people, painting is way worse!

So I clean up after every project and return to this once more, ready for the next foray into creativitysdrI do like to see it all clean and clear and  oh, so spacious – ready for the next creative outburst

  1. Finally a quiet moment to re-read this wonderful post for a second time, plus (bonus) all the lovely comments and conversations that followed. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the visit. You once told me this shade of blue but like many things, names and labels fall right out of my brain. It’s the darnedest thing. The color is beautiful, whatever it’s called, and it looks great with your pretty green couch. Your couch also looks comfortable, and is very much shaped like ours. There are thousands of beautiful couches/sofas out there, but only .000002 of them are actually comfortable in my opinion. Like you, I like a shallow seat, firm cushions and the sensation of solid below my tush.

    I too make a huge mess when creating in my small space, but need to tidy it up before starting anything new. Also, like you, I have a pair of scissors in the home office, next to the washer and dryer, in the kitchen and in my swing kit. I used to have small folding scissors in my purse, but then 9/11 happened and they are now banned from airspace.

    Ms. P. Buttonbottom is as charming as ever, and such a handy woman to have about. While scientists and engineers are working out the latest robot to do one task, you’ve created a charming assistant capable of doing all but hand you the proper tool.

    • Hello there Alys. I do hope life is settling down somewhat and your young men are settling into their academic years. Life changes quite dramatically for mothers when the children are gone doesn’t it – suddenly we find lots of hours the day never previously contained. Now is the time to do all those things you wanted to do and never had time or energy for. I remember – being a bit of an introvert – so enjoying the time alone. I’ve never stopped enjoying that 🙂

      And I must work on getting Ms Buttonbottom mechanised – not only capable of movement but also of ascertaining which tool might be required next…….. If the listener in my phone knows what to offer me because she heard a random conversation somewhere, I’m sure Petui can also be induced to overhear my thoughts and act on them 🙂 Wouldn’t that be fun!

      • Hello Pauline. C is home for another two weeks, as his university is on the quarter system. He and his brother start their school year a full month apart. It’s been a nice time to have just the three of us at home, but we all miss our young man, and will miss C. when he heads out for his senior year.

        I’m looking forward to reclaiming some space in our home office for a dedicated craft space. It’s tidy and ready for me, but I’ve been catching up on so many other things that I’ve yet to jump in.

        I do like the idea of a mechanized Ms. Buttonbottom. Perhaps she can hum to you as well and sending soothing sounds to Orlando when the large trucks travel the road, or when Siddy gets excited during mail delivery. The possibilities are endless!

        • Now you are talking! 🙂 I knew C was home for a bit longer, I had just done that elderly forgetful thing again 🙂 The room, being ready to go when you are ready, is an excellent thing though. I haven’t been in my room for over a month – all my hours are spent crocheting trying to get the big secret project done and dusted. And I’m nearly there – hoorah!! I’m looking forward to throwing some paint around again…….

  2. First of all, I love your magic wand and the blues of your house and Siddy photobombing your image. 🙂 I am a little bit of chaos and a little bit of organized. I do my drawing and painting at the kitchen table, but have a cart (I call Art Cart) in the corner of the kitchen which houses my pencils, pens, paints, etc. However. Art Cart is often in a state of chaos from me rummaging around, looking for that certain something I *swear* I put right there but it’s moved itself somehow and now I can’t find it. lol! It is currently is a state of extreme chaos due to visits from my grandchildren. I don’t mind that at all. I do tidy things up once and while, and when things settle down here on the ranch in a week or two, I’m going to see what I can do to better organize things.

    • My magic wand has been very popular Robin 🙂 I have two art carts – one houses the commonly used painting paraphernalia and the other houses all the pencils and pens. both tend to get muddled – it must be something to do with the nature of being a cart! Best wishes for the organizing – I love doing it, many don’t 🙂

  3. Oh my goodness you are an inspiration! I ve added color to my garden this year. Spray painting junk. Lol. What a difference color can make with an old worn out throw away😉 Your work is moving to another level. I love it! By the way listened to Dr Joe on You tube. Very interesting man! I wish I could be as organized as you, I’m afraid I’m never going to be that disciplined I’m a Gemini! I just blame the disorganization on my twin😄

      • lol..done up garden junk were my old fountains. I spray painted them with bright colors this spring. They were in a few photos. Some crazy odds and ends that just needed a fresh coat of paint. Nothing too creative, but I have some ideas! I love old junk transformed…well, kinda of like me now that I turned 60 this year! LOL

  4. Dear Pauline, this is the first blog catch up I’ve done for so long, it’s lovely to see you again so happy in your tidy and orderly and beautiful home. I love your blues, so light and airy, and cosy…and of course, gorgeous Siddy, who obviously has photo-bombing down to a fine art 😉 Your wall hanging is stunning! This being our first year in our new/old home, we’ve been painting and decorating, getting to grips with the garden and undergoing unexpected, extensive – and expensive! – house repairs, such as having all the plumbing replaced and our bathroom gutted, thanks to previous bodge jobs. So it’s been noisy, disruptive and full of clutter, not the best environment in which to write. Like you, my friend, I am a virgo, and so I will be very happy when peace and calm is restored! 🙂 ❤

      • Ha, so true. We have the fun part and then something else comes disruptive along…it does get tiresome, but that’s life isnt it? Still…we’re making progress and that’s always a good thing 🙂 Yes, I have got a ‘study’ at last, but I still write on my laptop on my lap mostly in the living room. I need to do an update post at some point. Thank you Pauline, I’m making progress with my book, slowly but surely…you will hear my cries of joy when it’s finally done! Oh I know what you mean about trees. I had to give up my beautiful Acer tree in the other house. We don’t have a tree in our garden now, but there are several around us. We need our dreams! I’m not a good housekeeper, but I have to admit to liking my crafty workspace clear and well organized when I start a project. Nothing to interfere with the creative focus! I have an entire craft room, well actually an entire house as I live alone and also work on the dining room table and the sofa, but I end up with the tiniest space imagineable, then I start working ON TOP of stuff! This has led to one or two disasters when sewing… think scissors and rotary cutter!

    • Oi-vay!! I have done that with paints and ended up with two smeared canvases and paint all over my sundry scattered supplies and the carpet!! That was a lesson well learned! You sound like my kind of crafter 😀

    I work in complete chaos and it overflows all over the house, with half finished, half forgotten and just started projects created by me and my grandchildren taking over nearly every available surface. Someone needs to take me in hand and sort me out! Ooops – that should be me then!

    • Thank heavens!! I knew someone had to be living in creative chaos! We can’t all be Virgos 🙂 I had a friend many, many years ago when our children were young who would enter my house and just sigh and sit …. She had four boys and was always impeccably yet beautifully creatively attired. She cooked, gardened, sewed, knitted, taught sewing classes part time and read an enormous amount. She was interested in everything and her house was a complete and utter nightmare. I would visit and find her concocting something exotically tasteful for dinner amidst a pile of unwashed dishes, scattered ingredients and the detritus of four boys forays into the kitchen looking for snacks. I would start cleaning up while she continued to hurl things around enthusiastically. She wanted to make a pretty corner for herself and so we set up a little table in the corner of her bedroom with a pretty cloth and a few of her precious things and a bowl of flowers and she tended that table carefully. It was an oasis of calm in her storm of creative and houseworking chaos. I loved her spirit and ability to be centred in her chaos and have spent a lot of my life trying to be just a little like her.

      I love that you have all those projects going on with your grandies and your own current project is completely mind boggling!! You know what they say – If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!! 🙂

  11. Thanks for inviting me into your beautiful blue home and your cosy working space. I clean up after myself to a certain degree, but not much in my study. I have piles of this and piles of that close to hand, just in case I need to reference them, but really because I have so much stuff that I just can’t bear to part with – yet. That’s a chore for downsizing at some time in the future, but not too soon, I hope. I don’t know how one could possibly craft without making ‘a mess’. You do well to put your desk back to rights once finished your project. And, as you know, I just adore Petui Buttonbottom.

    • Hello Norah! If you have hard copies of all your work sheets you would have reams of paper work stashed about! I know I did when I was teaching. I would spend a week every summer organising much of my requirements for the ensuing year – I used to love doing that. (I’m such a Virgo!!) I guess it is different now, so much is on the computer. But your study does rather sound like it is all there in hard copies still….. 🙂 As I’ve said so many times here, it is so interesting seeing how everyone works – have you ever considered doing a post about your space and process? You could have a Petui for pens and pencils and other office paraphernalia you know. Do you crochet?

      • My Petui for pens and pencils would need to be rather large, Pauline. I have too much stuff. I had an overstocked classroom and brought it home when I finished up to my overstocked study. Though I have given heaps away, I still have way too much. One day, I’ll go through and toss it all out. Before someone else has to!
        I used to crochet in a former life. Haven’t done so for yonks. 🙂

        • Oi vay!! You sound just like me when I stopped teaching – oh lord the stuff! I spent years slowly letting go until I finally had let go enough to give the last of it away. I can’t tell you the relief I felt. It’s such a process and takes a rather long time. And you are still working – there is always the thought ‘this might come in handy’.

          I hadn’t done any needle work for years either, but then I retired and started blogging and saw what all the clever gals were up to – and the next thing I knew I was collecting yarn and needles and hooks…… 🙂 There’s always something to collect 🙂

  12. I love this post! I’m always interested in creatives and their spaces. Your room is so inspiring! I was thinking of doing a post about my writing room. I spent the day today cleaning up after my latest writing deadline. I start fresh before beginning each article (or articles), then over the writing time my desk, floor, and every space is covered in research materials, papers, books, magazines, etc. I love cleaning and filing everything away afterwards. I really enjoy each part of the process, although it can be stressful with deadlines. Siddy looks like he’s typing:)

    • I had to go back and look at the photo with Siddy in to see if he was typing. He could indeed be – but what he was really doing was pretending he hadn’t heard me ask him to get down so I could get a photo without him in it 🙂 He’s such a star! Please do write a post about your room and process, I love to see where creators create! I find it quite fascinating, just getting all this feedback here has been so interesting. I think because I primarily work alone in my creative space sometimes it’s nice to know everyone else is getting along in similar ways….. And here we are being alike again – I very much enjoy putting all my bits back into their containers and the containers back in their designated places, even if I’m going to immediately start pulling the same things out again. I wipe down all my surfaces because they get paint and glue and sparkly things over them, I use a swiffer cloth to pick up all the sticky bits if necessary and when that is done I stand and admire and start all over again 🙂

  13. I love your blue room it is so soothing. Of course Siddy is as precious as ever! My crafting spaces start out clear and organized. That immediately goes down hill the minute I start working on something. Thus, I am always searching for the next thing I need beneath all the things already strewn about. I am like you. I need to put everything back in some semblance of order before I stop for the day. The cards you are working on are wonderful. Is one of them a peacock?

  14. Haha. I do like a clear space, but I tend to work till everywhere is covered. I have a table in the corner of a guest bedroom,. I end up with stuff on the bed, the window sill and the floor, and when I can barely get out of the room I stop, till it dries and I can clear up.
    Fabric projects are on the dinng room table and I clear that up for meal times.
    Knitting and crochet is put away each time and happens n the sitting room.
    I think you have the perfect set up from your pictures, pretty and practical.

  15. Well if I didn’t live with 13 other people, I would have the most lovely organized spaces ever!! I thrive on organization and knowing where everything is! I’m an Aries, Mr T is a Virgo and he did not get the organization memo!! We are both also the oldest of our siblings. Try telling an oldest what to do! ;o)
    I have had many compliments on my organization here, but alas its not the decorative organization I crave! LOL! It’s the mundane everyday things!!
    I need a blue room! So tranquil! Have you ever posted your window views from those 2 rooms? I’d love to see your beautiful views from the window over your desk and the blue room!

    • One of the reasons my tiny house is so pretty is because the views are not very inspiring Eliz. I live in a city suburb in an area I call lovingly ‘the dodgy end of town’. In the summertime when I take photos you might get to see some of the outside – and I usually post a pic or two of my uber tiny courtyard come mid summer – otherwise, truly there isn’t much to see!

      • Then its my wonderful imagination that you have sea side views!! We live in the “hood” (run down, old, crime worries) as my grown kids call it. We have lived there 42 years so no moving now! We are blessed to be able to summer in the Woods, no running water, or plumbing! But a break from the neighborhood!

  18. I’m impressed with your self-control, to keep everything so perfect and tidy, and to clean up after every creative foray! I try, I really do . . . but we have looms in 5 rooms and yarn everywhere. Plus all that other stuff for sewing and whatever. I almost never know where anything is and am often frustrated. I’m a Scorpio–are Scorpios known for disarray? My sister is a Virgo and she is very tidy, like you . . .

    • I have known some incredibly messy Scorpios and one or two tidy ones. I don’t think ‘organisation’ is written into the Scorpio psyche like it is in the Virgo, Libra and Capricorn. Your excuse is the the type of craft you work at and the amount of looms you house. It’s the frustration thing that motivates me – I don’t want to waste time looking for things – so if I had five looms, each loom would have it’s own tool set and somewhere to house it’s own yarn requirements. I have at least one pair of scissors in every room of this tiny house 🙂

  19. Son of a crafter, married my mother I’m fastidious about clearing up otherwise I know I’ll be sown/stitched/embroidered/woven into some new piece. Still I understand this onion tsunami of layered creativity that takes a few meah threads and bits of floor cloth and confects art. Talk about gold from base materials. Me, I have my space, my corner in the garret. It’s my memory desk covered family photos going back to my grandparents and which, in the event I need inspiration is staring back out at me.     PS your space is gorgeous Pauline. Really. Sort of place one should send ones Brain for a two week holiday so it can absorb the bonkers chaos and beauty. Just think what it would do with some of these prompts after that!?

    • Well, that’s odd – I know I’ve seen that desk before, but there is no record of me being there….. it is a fabulous desk!! Though I would find it very hard to do anything except look at the memories. Feel free to send the brain – wrap it well in strong plastic so it doesn’t drip gloob on the postie – I’d enjoy to see it at work for a few days.

    I am lucky enough to have a whole room to work in but, once, I let it get in such a mess that it took me a full week to tidy it up during which time I couldn’t make a thing so vowed never to let it get so bad again. It’s still slightly messy here and there but I always tidy up my cutting table after every project so it’s in a constant state of readiness for a new one – a bit like me.

    • You have already proved to me that you are ready to go at a moment’s notice – the mandala! We who have entire rooms to play in and can do as we like in there are most fortunate!! I’m in the middle of a massive cleanup – I do one every year. I sort through and toss out the stuff I earmarked last year as being possibly no longer required. Having proved that theory by remaining unused all this year, it’s off to a new home. Right now the storage (aka wardrobe contents) is all piled up around the room and having a thorough sort through, this process will maybe take a week to complete 🙂

  22. I love your living room! It’s fabulously blue and the tree is wonderful. I don’t have dedicated space, so when I do something, it has to be cleaned up because the space is going to be used for something else. And I don’t like clutter, so even if I had space, I’d likely clean up. When I had a business at home, I always cleared up at the end of the day because otherwise, work impinged on home. Yes, it would be great if we could wave a wand…

  23. Oh, that room with the blues and the greens and the tans and the Siddy – I love it! Your cat cards are precious.

    I love hearing about other’s creative process, and cleaning up is definitely a part of creativity. I get overwhelmed when things are a mess. BUT – often I am creating for a deadline – a birthday present or a magazine article, etc. that needs to be done at a certain time. So I tend to be messy while creating and even after. I run out the door with the finished product and come home to a mess. But I cant create in a mess. . . So – yeah – it’s a big struggle for me. Thanks for telling us how you do it!

    • I learnt a long time ago that I too ‘can’t create in a mess’ so therefore, if I want to create, the clean up is a must do. I suppose over the aeons it’s simply become part of the process. Deadlines are scary things to me!

  24. Love your living room, Pauline. It’s like a magical place. You do well in clearing your work area after each project. I see no other way.

    I’m a writer. My corner writing desk is well organized with large desk monitor occupying the central section, reference books on the left, and tray with files of work-in-progress on the right. Working space can become tight during the research process.

    • Ah, Rosaliene at work – what a great picture to have, thank you for sharing! I can imagine the piles of books and papers when doing your research – when I was teaching (most of it before computers) the books and notes were all over the place 🙂 ) I cannot move on to a new project when the detritus of the old is still around – that’s no longer creative mess, that’s just plain untidy! 🙂

  25. Your home may be small, but it is lovely. The blues are so vibrant! I don’t do crafts, but I have my office with my computer, calendar, lists, etc. This is where I research and plan hikes for my ladies groups, keep up with fellow bloggers, and keep all my records (like how many miles I hike each month, how often I exercise, etc.). It is usually very neat at the end of the day, because I can’t handle clutter. I look across the hall at my husband’s office, and wonder how he can find anything. We are very different in that regard. I’m a Pisces, but I do like organization.

    • I love to find out how everyone does their thing! The blessing of being empty nesters is the space that can be gained. I’m impressed with all those records you keep – I know of some crafters who keep accounts of how many metres of yarn they worked this month etc. which puzzles me, but miles hiked is another thing altogether!!

  26. Another post to add to my happy making collection. Yes, we are a fussy bunch, we Virgos. If we can’t get it orderly, it makes us a little crazy. But I’ve also come to realize if I’m going to do anything creative, a little mess must ensue. Like my license plate frame. A creative mind is never tidy. I like to start out tidy as well and clean up after though I have decided my bed gets pulled way down with the fan on it to air out for one cup of coffee. Then when thoroughly aired out, I make it all tidy again. Especially in summer when I often wake in a puddle in this heat. Changing pajamas almost daily.
    I love your aqua drapes. I’d like that color in my house but can’t find it. Sofa, drapes anything and a peach chair to go with it. What do I have? Ugly multi browns. ;( Practical Virgo. ;(
    I LOVE Dr. Joe!!! I have several of his books and right now I’m trying to integrate them into my every cell as you can well understand. I listen to him on Utube and audible. I think I must be thick headed or something.
    I have not heard about the mat you are speaking of but shall look it up. Everything is tidy in both rooms as this Saturday is mother and daughter sewing day. I am here for moral support and advice while I find no excuse to work on my own 40 million projects or at least one of them. 😉 You do a lot with such a tiny space. I have so much more room and do next to nothing lately. I needed this push. I’m showing the wand to my daughter. She found one she has taken to work to magically make the distractions disappear. It will make her smile. I love your cat drawings. That almost goes without saying and I agree you should patent you Etui doll. She brings great creativity into your space or do you bring it to her? 😉 Hugs to you and the fuzzies. Love seeing them. Orlando must be hiding.

    • I cannot believe you cannot find that colour – have you looked in Portland? It’s been around since the 70’s in different tones (except for the 90’s when everything was drab tones of neutral – and even then I painted my kitchen in shades of blue, apple green and lemon) 🙂 I do love my Ms Petui – she’s so personable and handy! But I wouldn’t patent. Ideas are just ideas and everyone should be able to develop their own versions. I’m not a big fan of all this claiming that’s going on. I think Orlando has declined to have his photo taken recently – he does always seem to disappear whenever the camera gets produced. Have a great weekend sewing with your daughter. I do love when people pop round to do and learn with me. It can be a lot of fun.

      • I can find the color in paint but not finished drapes especially the inexpensive kind. 😉 I guess I don’t shop in the right stores here. I saw them on television show out of California and even wrote to them asking where they got their sofa and drapes. It’s such a peaceful color. 😉 I probably wouldn’t patent it either but was thinking of passive income for you. I looked up that glass pad you were talking about and Amazon has them but I have no idea how well it works. Cat’s and dogs can pick up the frequency of the camera. Dogs seem to mind less but mine never liked the camera either. I hope the sewing goes well. We had no power most of today. ;(

          • I have been looking at home dec fabric and given it serious thought. More than I can spend right now but had things turned out differently, I would have done it. It’s such a peaceful color. Yes, the power came back on after several hours. Fortunately, we are having 2 days of break from the unrelenting heat.

            • I look in store at the end of line and specials tables. I just bought 3 metres of that colour in furnishing fabric to recover the small chair that Siddy is standing on in the photo for an entire $9. It’s such a bargain, it won’t even matter if I muck it up 🙂

  27. Did you wave your magic wand to tidy up, Pauline? I have a room too and every now and then I have a good tidy up and gradually it gets messy again. Luckily I can close the doors so no one can see it. I love the blue tree of life hanging behind your sofa.

    • That wand always goes on the blink when I wave it to do a clean up Carol – seems to be an in-built fault! I know it’s time to do a tidy up when I spend more time looking for the pen that got buried beneath a pile of other stuff than actually using it. 🙂 I love my tree of life too ❤

  29. Oh my gosh! I love the cat cards, Pauline! They’re adorable! You need to patent Ms Petui Buttonbottom and get her on the home shopping channel! Do you all have those types of channels? I love the blue…it’s so soothing and of course, then there’s Siddy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤ ❤ ❤
