Two Months – Really?

Doesn’t time go past fast when you are having fun, or prevaricating – er, sorry – incubating new directions in your art work………

The large work in progress on the easel remains just that, a large work in progress on the easel.  I shall probably finish it just because I am tired of skirting round the thing as I try to get at other supplies.  If you are new here, (and there have been so many new follows since my last post, and I am inordinately grateful to have you here, thanks for coming by and please do feel free to jump into the general chat, we love that!)  here’s a link to where we were at two months ago and where we’re pretty much still at as far as this particular piece goes……..

Now to catch us all up.  It, the painting, got neglected due to the fact that other tasks called me.  I’d call them commissions, except no money changed hands other than between me and my art and craft supplier  🙂   I am repaid in love and in a hundred other practical ways including the majority of the photos in this post, so lets just call it Creating Happiness and Fun Everywhere or CHaFE, which is somewhat of an unfortunate acronym  ( I wish I could input a belly laugh emoji here)

First there was a living room do-over.  From this:

A wall of Inkies doodled and undoodled, framed and artfully hung to make a colourful backdrop of YD’s favourite colours over her newly covered cream couch.

Inky Wall 3 Isn’t it lovely!  I think even if you don’t like pink particularly (Marlene I’m looking at you) you’d have to admit it is a lovely transformation, yes?

While I was at it I made four more catchers, including a very special one for YD’s friends who  lost their little dog in a road accident and who just a bit later farewelled their beloved, aged cat.   So, for Karen and Craig, a commemorative lightcatcher for Ruby and Bear which will twinkle and glimmer whenever the sun shines and remind them of happier days with their four-footed friends

The other three are to go into my shop which is having a bit of a do-up itself and I’ll show you them in the next post.

I also am involved in making lots of cards as I work my way through my huge back-stash of crafting goodies.  I received a lovely birthday gift from my friend Alys, a stamping platform, and now can use my stamps with impunity.  Here’s a small sprinkling of what I’m creating – a bit faded I’m sorry.  The sun disappeared and gave me a thunderstorm just as I got them ready for their close-up …….

Of course life contains many more interactions and activities than is revealed here.  Siddy and I continue to walk every day – not one day missed this year – and I continue to enjoy my moments of quiet contemplation interspersed with a chat to a favourite tree or a person we meet along the way.   This walk very often serves as my daily meditation and I have added in a really gentle yoga programme, to accompany my friend Robin over at Breezes at Dawn on her 40 day programme.   We are over half way through and I have the feeling I’ll just keep doing these gentle bends and sways and holds.  #FeelingGood

We need to feel good these days don’t we – as the world bends and sways under the weight of lunacy and egos and ignorance.  The only valid way to respond is with more peace, more calm, more thoughtfulness and more compassion.  Starting with ourselves and moving out through our circles of loved ones, colleagues, neighbours, out further to those who suffer, those who are lost and eventually to those who incite hatred out of their own need to raise themselves out of their own personal hell.

Create beauty, spread it about and smile at a stranger.

  1. How did I miss this? I love the living room do-over so much and am in LOVE with that lightcatcher!!! Oh my gosh. It’s so absolutely gorgeous. Does Siddy or your kitty go after it? I’m thinking I want one of those babies. Are you selling them?

    • Hi there Luanne – thanks so much for popping by. Maybe you were off investigating Lake Tahoe when I made this once in three months post 😀

      The little fellows like the comets and rainbows, but can’t get at the catchers as they hang too high. Orlando may have tried in his younger days, now he is content to blink and purr at the pretty lights. Perry may find one quite attractive……

      I do sell them and I also make to order – I am long overdue putting some into my little shop (see the directory under the header picture) but there is info there about pricing and shipping and so on. They are especially effective around the equinoxes when hung in your favourite sunny window.

    I love YD’s makeover. I’m not generally a pink person either, but I really like this room. Pairing the pink with green and cream is perfection. It looks like a place one could relax. Your inkies are fabulous! What a great way to create a dramatic wall of art. The dangler is fabulous too, and as you know I’m a huge fan. I have all three hanging about the house right now (the original and the two wonderful Halloween additions.) I love them. I got to show Kelly your Halloween light catcher when she was visiting.

    Back to the room…the red wine rack looks great painted white. It’s a nice, functional room-divider too, but now it blends beautifully. I like it!

    Pauline, your cards are gorgeous works of art. Each one must take hours to complete. I love the set you sent for my birthday. It’s fun, isn’t it, using supplies we’ve had on hand? I always enjoy that. I’m thinking about making a paper quilt pattern and then using scraps in coordinating colors…in my spare time. [ahem]

    Well done on the yoga and the regular walks. I’m missing my walks and once we truly get autumn weather (we’re in the midst of a near-record breaking heat wave) hope to resume with regularity. Too bad Tessa won’t walk on a leash. 😉

    • I do have a lovely group of people who comment here don’t I Alys – but so do you too – I haven’t yet come across anyone who is unpleasant actually in over four years of blogging. It’s a lovely platform isn’t it. Thank you for taking the time in your busy life to pop in. I do love the thought of you popping a kitty halter on Tessa and taking her for a walk around the block. I did buy a kitty halter and leash for Orlando when he was very young and thought I might be able to train him to it, but I didn’t practise it enough and he got skittish, so that went in the too hard basket for us both. I’d forgotten about your Halloween light catcher – so happy to hear you have them out again. 🙂 I hope it cools down for you soon so that you can have more of an autumnal atmosphere going on. This weather is crazy! Is the smoke clearing for you yet? We teeter between hot summer days and a rerun of winter. I’ve begun to think I don’t care what season I’m given, just give me one 😀 I hope you find the time to make your paper quilt pattern and create a card or two. I did something with some of the scraps I had, gluing them down in a random pattern and using a pen to to make faux stitching marks around each piece and a bit of lacy washi tape down one side – it’s surprisingly effective. I just have to finish them and I’ve gotten sidetracked again……. 🙂 D’s gone off to see her sister for a week so I have that time to concentrate on cleaning up my art room and finishing all these projects. Siddy is going into puppy day care for at least one full day and possibly two if I can swing it – woohoo! (It’s so like having a two year old!)

  7. I wish I had you as my chief decorator! What a transformation, and all done with color and upholstery covers, not to mention that nice wall of inky doodles. It looks great–and probably even better with little rainbow comets shooting around it. Well, life does intervene in our blogging, doesn’t it? And spreading a bit of color can only be a contribution to the good.

I have had a life time of making silk purses out of sows ears 🙂 The great benefit of having a career of little financial recompense is learning how to stretch that creativity to create spaces that are pleasant without spending more than a dollar or two. It’s a really lovely room to be in now – quite girly and feminine and why not!! YD’s favourite colours so she is most happy!

  9. Hello mama P! I’m loving all the artsy touches that make YD’s home so awesome! Your gallery of inkies (love that term) is so pretty and cosmic and inspiring! I always admire these walls with differing sizes of frames all puzzled together! I also fancy that four legged footstool and saw one I fancied just last week when Alys and I were at Target. Silly Canadians didn’t shop there and they failed in Canada but I loved it and was sad to see Target leave. I arrived home late Saturday from my drive-by holiday with our lovely Alys. We had 7 days of hanging out, shopping, Starbucks and giggles. I feel refreshed even though the smoke did get bad a couple of days. Did you know they’re having terrible fires in Napa/Sonoma? It’s just north of Alys and Mike by about 140 km.
    I kind of chuckled at your easel waiting for your return. I’ve got so many started projects. I tell myself it’s because I want to do everything and anything 😀 It sounds better than saying I may have a short attention span, Ha!
    The sofa cover turned out so nice. I’ve taken library books out that show how to do this, but I never have attempted it. What did you use for fabric? Did it take tons?
    Sorry your friends have lost two pets, I can imagine how the sadness would be almost overwelming. You’re really thoughful to gift them one of your treasures hon ❤ The charms with the photo's are dear and so are you.

    • Woke? I haven’t even heard of that one – i am obviously not at all hip any more 😀 Yes, I did hear from Alys about the fires and they sound awful. I am glad they are all safe. And I heard that you made it too, that was so disappointing when you both became ill and had to cancel flights. So glad you had some time together! As to the sofa – we’ll show you how to do it on a tight budget when you are here 🙂
      Yesterday and today were major garden shopping days – the tiny courtyard is getting its spring do-up. It’s very late this year due to inclement weather holding on, but we are still hopeful the good stuff will eventually arrive. I have so many items lying about in my room for me to craft with I am becoming overwhelmed by the choices – I think I’ve just discovered that, regarding supplies, too much is too much and little is enough! Have you booked flights yet? We need to chat about visits with certain people you want to see – it’s getting difficult to know how to fit everything in……. ❤ Love, hugs xoxo

      • How exciting to be getting into gardening season. I hope you won’t wear yourself out preparing for our arrival. But then again, I took on a curbside renovation 2 weeks before Alys arrived here, so, LOL, who am I to talk.
        We haven’t booked our flights yet but we’re attending an evening presentation with our lovely travel agent next Tuesday. It’s all about travel options to Australia. Tours available etc. Jim and I plan 2 weeks there before I arrive in New Zealand. He will fly on home and I’ll fly over to NZ. I’ll send more detail in an email my dear!
        I’m catching up this week from my trip to visit Alys. We had a week of fun in the sun. I go back to work next week but have been blogging and making kits etc all during the month. It’s been good. I almost can’t believe I’m coming but getting excited too xoxo K

  16. Oh I would say that is time well spent, Pauline. I love the light, airy feel of the room, and I like the pastels, especially the pink. I know she will be happy with the cheery room. Your light catchers are so gorgeous and what a lovely gesture for that dear couple that lost their beloved pets, my heart goes out to them! You will get back to that easel, but I say, enjoy life in between the paint brush strokes, and I think yoga is a great way to help us feel better about all the bad things in the world today. I stretch, unless I’m terribly exhausted, but I don’t do any sort of a regular program. It definitely helps me feel better when I do it.

    • Thanks for all that Lana – and re the loss of pets it’s so hard to lose them one at a time isn’t it – but the two of them so close was just awful for them. Those were their babies! Returning to a gentle yoga practise after so many years away from it – apart from some cursory attention when I felt stiff and sore – is really lovely. Keep at it 🙂

  17. What a spectacular transformation Ms Pauline! I think that the pink is tempered well with other pastels and the room looks lighter, brighter and much more feminine. Kudos girls 🙂 I am so sorry for your daughters friends losing their little dog and their cat 😦 The world is a bit mental at the moment you are absolutely right BUT that’s where we need to step in and spread the love around. I am currently hooking a shawl for a fellow classmate who nursed her husband who had terminal cancer till he passed away and who now volunteers in an art gallery and who is studying to reignite her desire to make films. She is so selfless and deserves something to remind her that selfless behaviour is a reward in and of itself. Just recovering from the flu at the moment but I put an effort in and dragged my sad carcass up to Sanctuary yesterday and threw mulch all over everything before it dries up and turns to dust. I wrote a blog post too 🙂

  19. A do-over for your Yd is such a gorgeous gift and I’m sure it brightens her life and I love your own teals, turquoise and sea peace colors back at your home. Loved this grouping of paintings and my Mom loved hot pinks with gold and lime green, then changed green to a light green over the years until their nautical colors of blues.     • You have an excellent memory about my colours Robin! But no Etsy shop for me, just the one page on this blog. It’s rarely visited, but there just in case 🙂 I remember your mom loving pinks, we must have discussed this before somewhere and also the lake house which makes my heart go ‘ping’ with a sort of yearning…… a home by the sea or lake or river.       • On my cellphone there is a little happy face, it gives me choices of what to add to messages, blog posts and responses. I just rotate through them until I see something to maybe apply.
        It is so odd, late tonight and across the hall a man is singing sotto voice in a bass tone. (Like someone in an opera!) I sometimes like the noise of the washers and dryers but if they leave a metal belt or coins in the machine, I grab my robe and open the dryer, set the belt whose buckle or coins were going “whap, whap, whap!” (or “ping, ping, ping!”) on the top of the machine, restart it and run back to bed. Shhh! 😴

        • Good on you for putting a stop to the dryer noises. That must be an intrusion on your privacy! But the singing – now that would be nice! You remind me of the time I was in Florence and walking alone down a narrow cobbled lane at siesta time, a little lost, trying to find my way back to the duomo where my friends were waiting. As I walked I could hear a beautiful tenor voice somewhere ahead of me, the narrow street and high terrace houses making a funnel for the sound. I walked slowly and listened and I could hear the voice coming closer and closer. It was so beautiful and I stopped feeling lost. As I walked on a man suddenly appeared from around a bend and walked towards me, still singing, just enjoying the music he was making I felt, as was I. He walked and sang and I walked and listened and as we passed each other he held my gaze and winked at me without missing a beat and so we kept walking on, him singing, me listening, until I could hear him no more. It was magic!

          • I loved this magical memory of music, Pauline! I think music makes us happy inside. I was liking the man’s voice but prefer singing in the early hours of the day and quiet more after work. 😊
            Music is preferable over yelling or a belt hitting the metal drum of the dryer (or washing machine, if it happened.)

  21. Wow–you have been spreading love and creativity all around! I’m am not a “pink person” at all but I can see how that room must be so relaxing and joyful to live in now–it’s transformed! And I especially like how much of *you* there is in it, from the inky doodles to the light catcher—that’s fabulous! The one you made as a tribute to dear, departed pets is perfect, too. Such a thoughtful, sweet person you are–an antidote to so much of the sadness in the world!

    • Well thank you Kerry 🙂 Though ‘sweet’ is not an adjective I would partner with my name 😀 I have enjoyed watching my daughters transition from a red person to a pink – it entails a softening and relaxing, a deepening and maturing that is delightful to observe and I think that is what she is reflecting in her room decor. I also love that she likes my inky doodles 🙂 They are so fun to make!

  22. Oh! Pink and green together is one of my favourite colour combinations and you and YD have done it beautifully. How lovely, and that light catcher is fantastic. I’ve never seen such large beads and crystals. Knowing what kind of weather you’ve had at times, I’m impressed that you and Siddy haven’t missed a day walking all year. Well done to you both.

    • Thank you – we are quite pleased with ourselves too…. well I am. Siddy just expects his walk after first breakfast and herds me round until he gets me out the door. Left to my own devices I’m pretty sure there were several days when I would have happily stayed indoors. Apparently we are quite famous locally – ‘the lady in pink gumboots with the white and black dog’ one elderly gentleman we bumped into recently pointed out where he lived and informed me he could set his watch by our appearance in the park. He was exaggerating of course, we can be an hour either side of 9am.

  23. There’s so much to like here but is it only me to notice the transformation in the wine rack at the end of the sofa. In pic one, albeit it is difficult to see, it seems pretty full whereas two months later it’s down by two thirds. Maybe that explains the two months absence… two months supping all that and I might even send my MIL a Christmas card – hell, after that lot she’d be up for a valentine.
    Truly though you know how to sparkle a room and while these gaps in your posting pass they are holes in our reading, so come on, buck up, girl. You have a public (says the man who didn’t post for nearly a month)

    • Oh you should see it now! It’s been filled up again. Sadly its not my wine rack or living room. I apologise for not being clear – its my daughters room and the ‘wine cellar’ is hers. It used to be my wine rack many years ago and she inherited it when I pretty much gave up all but the very occasional glass of wine. Christmas and such like…….. Bucking up – pulling up socks and so on, can’t let the readership down… tally ho! 😀 Well that’s the intention anyway – who knows what will happen.

Yes, I think we all are trying to find meaningful ways to help reduce stress caused by the insanity of others whom we have no control over whatsoever. I now feel I understand completely Henry II. Will no one relieve us of this moron?

Your suncatcher must really brighten the room it is incredibly gorgeous. ☀️ We are also in the middle of spiffing up the place before the holidays but nothing quite as creative. Most of ours is changing out a few knobs, gizmos and a few coats of paint. How impressive that you’ve managed to get out and walk every day!     • Hello there Jan, you and I are just as lax at posting these days. 🙂 I often feel I am so busy reading and chatting away on other’s posts that everyone knows what I’m up to anyway – but of course not everyone reads the same blogs….. Yes, we have walked through wind, rain, hail and sleet this year bracketed both sides with warm, balmy early morning walks. Siddy is a great blessing to me in so many ways, but this early morning walk thing has to be one of the best gifts. I love my dog! ❤

    • Thank you Jill. It’s not my space, though I get to visit it quite often as it is YD’s living room. These are her favourite colours and it is good to surround yourself with colour you love. My space remains stubbornly blue and white 🙂

    • It’s my youngest daughters living room Jenny – mine remains stubbornly in the blue realm 🙂 I promise you if you get a Siddy pup your whole life, not just your walks would take on a whole new perspective. He is possibly the best thing to have come into my life in recent years. Contemplate away ❤

    • Thank you dear Gallivanta! We do work well together – and have fun. It was lovely to be asked by YD to make that commemorative lightcatcher. She has one I made when her kitty died a couple of years ago and it still hangs in her window and sends her ‘Stanley Sparkles’. Have you noticed that so often when pets die some folk feel they cannot grieve too much because after all they weren’t people – but for most of us our pets are just as beloved as any family member and they need a commemoration that allows us to remember them with joy. And that’s something I can make. Shine on my friend, shine on!!

  37. Can you hear me laughing, Pauline. Pink has it’s place, just not on me. 🙂 I absolutely LOVE the transformation! Painting the wine rack/end table, made such a difference as did the new slip covers and cushions. The art collage adds a sophistication and the major danglers add whimsy. I would imagine it feels a whole lot more inviting now. Well done all of you. I am fascinated that we both post at the same time but it’s only taken me one month, not two. Of course I’ve done very little in the last month. At least not anything I wanted to talk about yet. I’ve been thinking about you for days now wondering how you were doing. Happy to see you back.     • We both chuckled as we simultaneously visited each other’s posts – isn’t that the neatest thing! It’s a great transformation isn’t it – and such a welcoming and relaxing space. I think it fits YD so much more than the previous look. I do hope life hasn’t been too hard or harsh on you Marlene – I keep thinking about that situation you mentioned a while back………. let us know when you are ready.
