What’s on the Easel: 1

Less a mystery and more a what happens next – mainly so I can keep track of my progress……  And hopefully shorter than the last ‘Mystery on the Easel’ that so many of you loyally followed along with.  (Thank you 🙂  )

Here’s what we started with, from the last post.  It’s a big board for me 1200 x 900 mm.  My main thought whenever I look at it is ‘I hope I don’t muck this up!’

After two coats of gesso and a bit of fiddling it looked like this.  Why I chose yellow and then mixed orange with white to make peach – I have no clue.  Terrible colour palette!  But I quite liked the way the lower half of the canvas looked ……

I had no real idea where I might be going – except for the vague thought I might like to see if I could paint light …..

I threw a bit more paint around the following day but forgot to photograph it.

By the time I lay the brushes down today this had appeared

Let’s see where we go from here – I’m not seeing much light yet and who knows what might happen next!  You old hands know that anything can ……..

  3. Hi Pauline, I’m late stopping by. Apologies. What a stunning piece. I quite like the way this is going. At first I thought sunlight reflected in a muddy puddle. Then the greens and blues and the girl appeared and it felt so hopeful. I wondered – the sun coming out after a flood. All is not lost. Looking at #2 now, which brought me here – going backwards through my emails. 🙂 Have a great week.

  6. I love this insight into process. That first image was (for me) shallow water and a sunset (or rise) so you were indeed painting light that I saw! That last one I’m not sure about. It’s one of those ‘hmmm….what’s the artist doing here?’ things. I hope all is well Pauline! I need to email so we can set up that long ago planned for Skype talk!

    • Well, apart from also having those ‘Hmmm,,,what’s the artist doing here?’ moments all is well Lisa. Though after today’s marathon three hour going-round-and-round-and-over-and-over-the-same-thing- session I do think I might know where I might -no promises- be heading…… I figured you were too busy in the garden and kitchen to Skype – so just set it up to suit yourself and I will try my best to fit in with your availability.
      PS Yes you are right about the water and light – I saw that too and am, kind of, working with it…..

  7. I like it, Pauline. It is going to be a beach, right? An early morning walk on the beach with the sun coming up behind her and the wind playing with her hair? That’s what I thought I saw in it, but I know it will be lovely whatever you come up with! 😀

  9. I’m a complete amateur at painting and there are two things that I find so hard to capture. I think it’s because they’re both invisible – light and water. I can’t wait to see what materializes in your painting. 🙂

  10. As I said on FB – that looks like Tove Jansson – who loved the sea, so it is appropriate that she appears to be emerging from the water. It would have been her birthday yesterday. Now I’m looking for a tiny moomin in the picture – she often included them in her art even if they weren’t the main subject.

    • So I skipped over to FB and read your comment there and googled her name and looked at some of her art images……. Isn’t it terrible that I don’t know of her or moomins! You got it right with the water, that is definitely going to be water – the sea, as we share that love! Let me know if you ever spot a moomin, then I’ll know I’m channeling her 🙂

  11. Really enjoy your creative journey, Pauline. I like this palette as orange has become my new it’s my favorite color. My sewing craft/ room is in orange and it’s so cheerful and bright. It makes me happy! Can’t wait to see the finished results.

    • It is good to surround yourself with colours that make your heart sing isn’t it Jan. I realised when I woke up this morning that the orange is there for a reason and I shall be glad of it very soon! Stay tuned 🙂

    • Thank you Robin! I love sharing the process, it is so much fun hearing what everyone has to say and sometimes I follow an idea now or later…… It keeps me open and out of my analytical brain!

My email is ranelph12@aol.com if you want to send me the picture. I would love to see it. We are away this weekend, leaving tomoz morning and will off the radar but I would see it when I get back. I think that folks who have it all mapped out are great but those who get out on the tightrope and just start with no idea are the bravest because they are unafraid to try. I love how you layer things up and how that bit you do leads you to the next bit. And you know, it always seems to. I haven’t seen you wrong foot anything yet. That is the truth. But the belief in that truth is sometimes harder for a tightrope walker to have xxxx
