Inky, But No Doodles

Hello lovely friends!  The rain eventually dribbled itself to a stop here, though the unpaved ground feels more like trying to walk on jelly than firm land.  The sun shines, the wind has dropped away, even some daffodils are determinedly blooming in a few sheltered areas.  The light catchers are sending multitudes of rainbows around almost every room in the house, which delight me because the light catchers work best as the seasonal equinoxes approach.  And the coming season for us down here in the Riviera of Antarctica is SPRING ~ Tra-la-la-la – la-la!!

This is a photo from a year or two back, it’s not only me who is so happy this season is coming round again

YD (for all my lovely new readers that is Youngest Daughter, also sometimes known as the Official Photographer) wants a large inky doodle.  A large pink inky doodle.  For a particular frame.  She gave me the frame and I cut a piece of the precious A2 Yupo paper to fit.

So, with the art room all warm and sparkly and sunny I set to work and an hour or so later had the first layer done

And that was it – YD likes it as is – no doodling required.

Part of me is disappointed, there goes lots of meditative hours  spent happily doodling.  Do you think it would look nice doodled too, or do you, like YD, prefer it unadorned, sans doodles so to speak, like this?   Here’s an earlier doodled effort to remind you in case you have forgotten.  Inkies:

The other part of me says woo-hoo! This unexpected freedom means there’s lots more painting hours available.  Because, you see, there is something new sitting on the easel ….  do you want to see it?  (That was entirely a rhetorical question you understand, as you are about to see it right now…..)

That is one big board Yes?  1200 x 900 mm!  Those white stripes are sunshine (SUNSHINE!) through venetian blinds and little comet rainbows  are from light catchers.  And to put the size of the board into perspective here it is with the last ‘mystery on the easel’ painting resting against it

And off to the side, the’ inky, no doodles’ is drying and curing – and a dog – who has just had his hair cut – wondering if ‘inky, no doodles’ is edible ……..

That’s all for today, there’s a big empty board that is crying out for a couple of coats of gesso.  Thanks for coming by, I love that you did!

  2. Because I’m not on my own computer I seem to not be getting notifications again and caught your post on Facebook. Behind there too. I think there is a place for both doddles and no doodles. Although pink is one of my least favorite colors, I love how the project came out and if it makes D happy, what else matters? Your doodles do add a bit of something though. Siddy looks happy in that photo. I know you are as happy to see winter wind down as I am to see summer find a new place to be. We can not really see the sun for all the smoke in the air from the fires. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. It’s been weeks now with extreme heat and over 70 days with no moisture. Everything is drying and crisp. Your room looks so inviting even Siddy wants to sit and play in there. It’s just beautiful. A great place to create.

    • Helllloooo the lovely Anne. I was so excited to see your name on that blog post – I couldn’t believe it would really be you – but it was! Your poems are … wonderful – simply wonderful! I shall track down a copy of your book. That pooch is Siddy – SidArthur properly and yes, that is a play on Siddhartha because the day I met him and he climbed into my arms the carer said “He looks like a little Buddha sitting there” and that was that really. He looks like Monty when he runs so I often think of the two of you. I adore him and he adores me next after treats. ❤ A couple of days ago I was hunting for something in my art room and found a card you sent me a while back when you were on your annual pilgrimage home, of an Irish cottage – how amazing is that, and so soon afterwards you reappear. Magic!! xoxo

  4. I love your inky doodles added but think you did an amazing job with your fabulous colors as is.
    YD is obviously (justifiably) right.
    I adore the swirls and the center section with a celestial swoosh of stars. I see things in your patterns!

    The photo of Siddy in the daffodils is fantastic! I remember it but love my mind being refreshed. ❤

    • How lovely that you can see things in my sploshes of colour Robin 🙂 That delights me! I know you have been enjoying many flowers throughout your summer – but my eyes are delighting in the first signs of spring here after a long and very wet winter! Siddy can’t wait to get romping and sniffing in the fields of daffodils 🙂

    I like the doodles!
    I also love the natural light and shadows from the blinds and the light catchers. Seeing those reflections of light makes me sigh happily. They might win the day for me.

  8. Pauline, I always have such a good time here. I love the colors on the Yupo paper. I watched a video this very day of a card maker creating backgrounds using this paper along with Copic markers which I guess are a “thing.” The pinks are gorgeous (and I’m not even a pink person), but like Kerry, I’m quite fond to your doodles and the texture they add. It will be fun to see your copied paper and doodles together for comparison. That is a mighty big canvas and dare I say it, quite intimidating. Of course I’m not painting it, you are, and no doubt you are quite thrilled with the possibilities that lie ahead. I’m glad to see the sun shining through you windows, casting a lovely glow on your canvas and surrounding art supplies.

    • Hello Alys, it’s already a week ago since the remembrance gathering – it was beautiful! The new board is equal parts daunting and exciting and I’ve noticed the prevarication stage has set in. I guess that means I’m incubating a process, so I’ll go with the flow. Copic markers are indeed a thing, pens filled with alcohol ink for colouring. Different to the water based colouring pens in that once dried they don’t bleed when wet – but as the pens are given to drying out quite quickly, they are something I would never spend money on again. Some people love them. When the sun shines again and the light is good D will take a photo or two of her pink inky and I will enjoy to make a few doodles on the copies.

      • Thank you for explaining the Copic markers. I didn’t realized they dried out so quickly. I know you can buy ink refills, but they seem really pricey. I’ve just recently bought some Tim Holtz/Ranger Oxide ink stamp pads. So far, I’m mostly making a mess, but I hope to graduate to card-making one day. I can’t seem to find the dedicated time to practice these days, but as winter approaches and the days are shorter and cooler, I hope to make the time. Pink Inky sounds like a great name for a rock band, Pauline. Quick…get the copyright nailed down. 😉

        • Ha – Pink Inky! I could do with a little pot of gold right now 😀
          I have tried a couple or three brands of alcohol ink markers, they are all expensive, they all dried out quite quickly, some without being used. Even though I liked the effects you can get with them, they are just not for me. Practise using your product, get to know it and voila, masterpieces will ensue 🙂 A mess sounds about right for the starting point to me. Oh, and also watching You Tube videos helps.

    • Thy are stunning pinks aren’t they Carol – and the thing is the camera doesn’t pick up how shiny everything is, nor all the flecks of gold and silver that are spattered everywhere……. it is really pretty. Board is currently a patchy white with just one coat of gesso on – I’ve been delayed by a myriad of arty interruptions like more hunting for those two daisy pictures. YD came yesterday and also hunted. Now there are two flummoxed people – three if we count you!

  11. The unadorned is very lovely, but I like the one with the doodles, or maybe one of each, ha ha! How precious is Siddy posing in those daffodils? That big board looks incredibly mysterious, I wonder what you have in mind. Glad to hear there was a break in the rain and your light catchers are sparkling!

    • The original will stay unadorned and a couple of copies of parts of this huge thing will be gotten and then be doodled – best of both world, yes? I have no clue as yet what will emerge on that big board – I’m hoping ‘Light’ will play a part, but you can never tell with me 🙂

  12. Steve cleaned up one of my latest purchases (ancient spinning wheel from Gumtree) with a mix of linseed oil and turpentine. If I sniff it, I can almost imagine being there in your studio 🙂

    • Sometimes, especially at this time of the year when the windows and doors aren’t opened every day, my studio pongs of those painty chemical smells…… I have to open everything and work wrapped in a shawl 🙂 I think Linseed oil smells lovely, but I don’t work with oil paints so have no use for it.. I’m excited about you and all your spinning paraphernalia 🙂

  13. It’s lovely , singing with vibrancy the way it is Pauline.I’m with YD.I think the doodles take you into each area separately and you have to then move between them. Thisl arge one is more an energetic spring!

  14. I’m team doodles! I think the doodles make these blobs of color much more interesting. But YDs must be obeyed and if she prefers her inky doodle-less, then so be it! That’s a BIG canvas for your next adventure–I’ll be here, waiting to see what happens. I wonder if the sunshine slits and rainbows sparkles will inspire you . . . .

    • Yes, YD’s usually get what they want 🙂 (As do ED’s also) and puppies and pampered cats …. I’m looking forward to getting this big painting underway, though I have no clear starting point as yet….. Maybe I’ll muse on light for a bit though ……

    • Ha,ha,ha! I am not fond of ugly old office chairs, but they are comfy to sit on and those wheels are handy too, so I make them dresses…… Go on, make you chair a pretty dress ❤

There’s actually 3 clocks hidden away in that doodled example – my thoughts on the cosmos and all somehow seemed to include time pieces 🙂 Southern Hemisphere Val, New Zealand – we’re gearing up for spring after a very long and very wet winter even if August is still a day away 🙂

  23. Hmm, it’s a tricky one. I like the ink unadorned but then I also like your doodled version. I’d just use them for different things. Unadorned, I’d be happy to frame up and put on a wall. Doodled – and I think the design lends itself to more commercial ends…table cover, napkins, iPad cover…spectacle case, anything fabric related, I guess. Actually, curtains would be nice. 😊👍

  26. Both are beautiful. The doodled version reminds me of tiny individual mandalas–each unique. But I, too, have a YD, so I think if sans doodles is what YD wants, she shall have it:)

    • Yes, you are quite right! I think no doodles also gives each viewer the opportunity to see into the depths and shapes and colours as they choose. For such a big piece it is the right choice. I just like to doodle 🙂

  27. I really like the unadorned pinks which remind me of spring poppies. How nice to have a “commissioned” work from YD. And I don’t think I’ve ever been inside your art room where all the beauty arises. I’m interested too in your wonderful organization of all your tools. I’m struggling with organizing my writing WIPs at this very moment and so gave up and am distracting myself in the blogosphere. So glad I came by and saw your post. Happy spring, Pauline.

    • I have had vague conversations about doing a post on how my art room is organised Susanne – and it is on my list of ‘to-do’. The only problem is I really have no clue how best to put it all together. The thought of making a video occurs and that would be a big learning curve…. We’ll see. I like your new avatar pic. (I also liked your previous one.) Having ‘commissions’ from YD (or anyone) is great – she also feeds me regularly 😀

      • My YD took the photo and the previous one. She’s a budding portrait photographer, I think. She took some of MD (middle daughter) that perfectly capture her personality. I’m going to print and frame them. Is your YD a good cook?

  29. Oh Pauline, what a decision to make. I’m with YD. I love the Inky as it is. So beautiful on the lovely Yupo special paper. But then you remind me of your doodles, and I begin to wonder how it will look doodled. Which leads me to question – could you make a print of it to doodle on? How else am I to know?
    That is a humongous board!!!! Just as well you have lots of paint! The sunshine on it is very becoming. But then, I have to wait to see just what it is becoming.
    I’m pleased the sunshine has come out for you. Love the photo of Siddy in the daffodils (prepared earlier). Enjoy spring. I hope it’s pleasant.

    • Ah Norah, you make me smile 🙂 I agree, a copy to doodle is the answer. It might have to be just a fragment though as it is such a big piece I get get four A4 sheets laid out on it….. I shall get YD in her Official Photographer role to get some good photos before it is framed up. Then curious minds may be satisfied! The humongous board is both exciting and daunting and the only way to overcome daunt is to start throwing some paint on it ……… and nobody, least of all me, knows what will eventually appear…….. 🙂

  31. I’d be itching to doodle it… but the customer is always right. It will be interesting to see it in the frame. My doodling is currently on hold as there is so much else to do at the moment… I suspect that there will be more in the winter.
    By-the-way – did you find your missing pieces?
