Don’t Put Off Til Tomorrow ….

This was to be a post about an opera and some mittens – instead it will be a brief cautionary tale involving thoughts and irons and puppies and Emergency Rooms……..

You know how sometimes a day just starts off wrong?  Something is amiss, something escapes you, something is askew within your psyche…….?  My day started like that yesterday.  I was just a little grumpy, a little out of sorts, vaguely irritated with life.  No reason to be so, no idea why and seemingly no way to step out of it.  I went into the ‘just accept that today is an off day’ mode and watched the cricket, which even though the Black Caps won and We Beat the Aussies didn’t quite dispel the malaise.  And I worked a number of rows on the third incarnation of my crochet jacket [the tale of which is a whole other story] and finally toddled off to bed saying all will be well in the morning!

It was well-er in the morning, but not quite on top of my game I ignored the ironing board still sitting up in my workroom with several lightly steamed mittens laid out drying on its towelled surface.  I looked at the iron and thought, I should put that away and went on to the next thing.

The next thing was to have my shower, wash my hair and return to my workroom to begin the routine of light yoga stretches I had begun [again] to do each morning a couple or several weeks ago and had so far managed three consecutive mornings on. I lay on the floor beside the ironing board and began the alternate leg raising scenarios while puppy thumped me on the head with his latest ‘fetch’ toy.  Being ignored he gave up and skipped happily across my stomach to go sit on his chair.

Siddy had his haircut last week in a #1, he is ready for the army!

Siddy had his haircut last week in a #1, he is ready for the army!

After I finished jerking and moaning with pain from the hefty leaps of the careless puppy, I took a moment to straighten my spine out, stretch myself to my full 5′ 31/2″ and do some slow, deep breathing.  As I relaxed and centred myself Siddy jumped from his chair and something cold and very heavy, reminiscent of a brick, landed just to the left of my left eye.

For a moment I was completely stunned, then I am ashamed to say, I roared something rather akin to “Cheeses Crisp!” as I clutched at my eye to see if it was still there.  The pain was blinding and my hand did not recognise what it fell upon – something hard and cold and heavy.  I pulled it off my face with my right hand and saw it was the iron I had failed to put away.  My left hand was cupping the pain in that eye and when I pulled it back I saw it red with blood.

I don’t do blood!

Luckily there was the towel that had been wrapped about my wet hair and I used that to mop up the red stuff.

Eventually I staggered up to my feet and found a mirror to peer into.  Blood was smeared all about the top of my eye and was still oozing out of a jagged cut that would have, on any pirate, looked rather daring-do!  However on a somewhat tousled, stunned looking upper-middle-aged woman – well, it just lacked that certain debonair charm.

Feeling a tad off my game, which hadn’t been that great to start with you may recall, I sent a text off to my daughter who was on her early shift crying out for help.  My youngest daughter is terribly practical and very clever at fixing things and finding solutions to problems and is my go-to when my brain has shut down.  Which it had.

Within moments she was with me – and within more moments we were in the doors of the Accident and Emergency Dept of Dunedin Hospital where we spent the next half hour waiting to be seen and eventually I was adopted by a lovely nurse, poked with a particularly nasty biting needle, cleaned up, stitched where possible and glued in the other bits and finally eye examined for subterranean problems by a charming resident.  Eventually I was pronounced almost as good as a new one because I would likely now and forever after sport a dashing scar by my eye and sent on my way with dire warnings about wetting, touching or otherwise unduly disturbing the unstitched part of the wound for five days and a tube of antibiotic cream which I must on no account use as it would likely wet, touch or unduly disturb the unstitched part of the wound……..  so I left it in my daughters car.

So here I sit, slightly head-achy, a little the worse for wear – and my dears I am at an age when one needs all the help one can get in terms of ‘wear’ – but with no-one to blame but myself!

What I find really hilarious is that on reading a post from one of my lovely blogger friends early this morning, and still in a slightly irascible frame of mind, I had written a comment that had stated my desire that the world and her husband get their acts together and take responsibility for their choices and decisions.

Now that I have finished roaring with laughter at myself and acknowledged wryly that Karma is indeed a bitch – yes. I should have put the iron away and my morning would have been way more productive and you would now be coming to the end of a lovely post all about opera and mittens and, my friends – freebies!

I still have to write that one and if you would like to come by again to read it and find out about another giveaway, that would indeed be grand!

teal on hand

Until then – thanks for coming by today today, I love that you did!

  1. Oh, Pauline, what a… nightmare… story! I can so relate to these kind of stories. You have a bad day and it seems like God is saying, here is something to feel how a bad day really feels and puts you on the ground immediately 😀 We hope you feel better now. Extra Pawkisses 🙂 ❤

  2. Oh, Pauline, a tale of yoga and cold irons well-written. Lessons learned, but accidents happen. What is it about those “off” days? Part of life. I am just so relieved that you didn’t lose that eye, girl. And that your daughter was on it. I hate to imagine the bruise! Big healing hugs from Hawaii, Aloha, Christi

  3. Well, you didn’t reply so thought I best pop over and see if I had missed a post….wow, yes I had!!! You poor thing Pauline, that sounds nasty and a bloody painful experience, thank goodness your daughter is near to you, that would just be miserable without help. I hope you are on the mend though I expect that is going to take a while! Sorry I missed this 😦 xxx

    • Oh lor’ what didn’t I reply to? It was pretty bloody. Who knew there was so much blood around an eye! But now I’m pretty much mended – just a black eye that really isn’t that bad. It’s okay, except for the quizzical looks I get from people who are too polite to ask. 😀

  5. Owie! That sounds painful. I’m glad you are OK with nothing more than a scar to show for it. Scars, they say, make us more interesting. Or at least give us tales to tell.

I love that mitten. Absolutely love it.

    • You probably will never even notice my scar – it will be hidden under my fringe – so I shall remain uninteresting. I’m glad you love that mitten – it’s quite fun isn’t it!

  6. Pauline, NO! That sounds horrendous and frightening and painful. I’m just relieved that your vision is fine (I assume? I hope?) How utterly, utterly horrible. Wishing you a ridiculously speedy recovery. Thank goodness your daughter was nearby. Sorry I’m rambling, but I really was alarmed to read your post. I hope Siddy and Orlando are taking good care of you by making you smile and distracting you.

That crochet glove is divine, by the way.

So are you well enough to take us all to the opera yet?

    • Not to worry Twisted – all is quite well now. The stitches will come out in a couple more days and I can wash off the encrusted patch of dried blood that has formed over the twine and glue and hopefully my brain won’t fall out….. Siddy was very good for the first 48 hours when I wasn’t feeling quite my best. He never once demanded I play fetch or catch and just quietly slept beside me while I plied my crochet hook. However, now that I am back to normal, the fetch toys are being unceremoniously dumped onto my keyboard, my lap, my foot – whenever the feeling takes him.

      • Oh Siddy is such a dear heart. I love that he’s so attuned to your state. What a lovely, loyal dog. And I’m glad you’re on the mend. Your post was alarming to say the least. Irons are nasty. (That’s my excuse for never ironing.) Get well soon.

  7. So now there it is, good grief Pauline! What a crazy thing to happen. I bet you have a good black eye, but thank goodness stitches were able to do the trick. Oh and you mentioned glue, that’s a new thing :/ I’m very glad it didn’t fall on Siddy or Orlando, they are such little guys. Maybe you feel the same as me, I’d rather take the hit than have a injured pet, any day of the week. We can have an evening of comparing scars at Laurie’s. I’m sure we all have plenty. Given I grew up with all brothers , I have many and each has a story, LOL So welcome to the club. Hey? I keep meaning to ask, what’s your middle name? Just imagine the hilarity you’ll bring to parties explaining how you got ‘that’ scar. I hope it’s not giving you headaches too. Rest up, laz about, listen to music, take a mental break, be like a cat and snooze in a sun puddle…get some rest xoxoxo Love and Hugs K

    • I have the most stunning magenta-purple eye today Boomdee – it is spreading and changing colour every day. I am resting – it slowed me right down which is what it needed to do and so I am crocheting and watching the cricket – which is a big deal here this summer as we co-host the Cricket World Cup and have a really good team! I was gifted the computer link to be able to watch and am really enjoying it! [It’s the only sport I have ever liked.] I’ll teach you how to play cricket while we compare our scar stories 🙂 30 Days to go!

      • Oh jolly good then! Shall I bring along my whites? LOL. I’d love to learn the game. I’ve seen it on Downton. Speaking of, we just got the last episode this past weekend. Now we must wait till January 2016. Unreasonable schedule!! How can they ask us to wait so long? Gah! Yes, we’re nearing the holiday quickly now aren’t we. Has the clock sped up? xox K

        • Ha! I can just see you in your whites with aqua bowling shoes 🙂 Downton was a very short season [again!] They certainly aren’t risking us becoming bored by over familiarity! The clock has definitely sped up! My calender tells me it’s already nearly bedtime on the 4th day of March, while emotionally I still can’t get over the fact that it is almost the end of February!

  8. so glad to hear you are okay! As I read, I was thinking it might be your Siddy that was whacked with the iron. Thank goodness it did not knock you! It could have:-(
I could relate to this “episode”, I have done THIS too many times to count—-thought to myself, I need to move that to ‘here or there’ for I might stumble over it next time again…I don’t + I fall again!
phew-is what I say when I do something like that-it could of been worse-but what a pain!
Well, your trip is coming up here soon-in 4 weeks-your scars will be healed and spring will be in the air when you get to USA!
I have to admit- after too many episodes in my life- I ‘put’ it away now even if I am tired:-)
I was in the emergency room two summers ago after i went over my handle bars on my bike-no stitches, but I am more cautious now at my age:-)

    • Yes it was such a mindless thing to do! I make a point of listening to myself – but when I get distracted, out-of-myself, I don’t. And I was given a very swift reminder that I have chosen not to live like that any more. I think this incident came with enough obvious ‘Man, that was close!’ remarks to make it very obvious that I am very fortunate and need to honour that! Besides I can’t be doing with wasting time in the Emergency Room or getting any more battle scars! Going over your handlebars must have been horrific – I went over once as a child riding my friends bike and knocked my front teeth about – and I’ve never forgotten it!

  9. I’ve been thinking about you all day today, Pauline. Is the swelling going down a bit yet? More importantly, are you resting and trying to heal?

    Like

    • Ah, thank you Lurie – all the good wishes help don’t they! Yes, I am resting 🙂 And the pets are being vey quiet too which is lovely. Siddy especially is acting as if he knows something is amiss and is lying asleep at my feet. Whe Danella popped in a few minutes ago she got a wild and enthusiastic greeting and when she left he went back to sleep. I am grateful. The pain is much less today and the bruise is coming out more while the swelling is going down – so all is mending nicely. I’ll be right as rain in a day or two and on track to be with you in a month! 🙂 So exciting!! Compared to what you went through this is nothing more than a mosquito bite! xoxo

  13. Yowser – THAT was a less-than-magical day. Unless, of course, you figure in a saved eye, an available daughter, good medical help, and lovely pets to come home to! I remember how shocked I was a few years back by the amount of blood that poured out of my mother’s brow when she took a tumble. Who KNEW a face could contain so MUCH blood?? Can’t imagine how scary that must of been being alone with that! Glad you are well with humor and spirit intact!!

    Like

    • See, that’s the thing, I think it was completely magical! I was never scared. I was letting myself get tense and worried, I was off my game, losing the plot, not in the magic and I needed something to kick me back into the circle. 🙂 How much clearer can it be than here’s your eye, centimetre this way is your temple, centimetre the other way is your eyeball. Here comes the iron….. death, blindness or a couple of stitches? What would you choose? Today I’m awake and back on the game – pretty effective don’t you think? And of course all the stuff you said as well. So much blood – isn’t it amazing. My daughter said that in the ER when the nurse was cleaning me up the blood was everywhere and it kept running even after the stitches and glue were applied. I couldn’t see or feel so I was cool, but now I sport a blood encrusted patch that I have to keep dry……. sigh. Nothing is perfect 🙂 Thanks for caring xoxo

  15. Pauline, I am glad that you are all stitched up and on the path to healing that eye. That was quite a scary time. It takes skill to infuse humor is such a serious situation. I hope you won’t be left with a terribly huge scar. Why did you get an antibiotic cream if you can’t use it?
Stay well and have a good balance of the week. Enjoy the cricket!

    • The lovely Resident Doctor rushed off and got it for me and the lovely Triage Nurse glared at him and said “She has to keep it dry!” But he pressed it into my hand anyway……As I didn’t want to be the cause of any more minor incidents that morning I smiled cheerily, waved and made a quick escape 🙂 I wouldn’t use it anyway as I only use Weleda salves. We will find someone else who needs it and pass it on.

  20. I am with Ms Snail. Ironing is dangerous and you just proved it so I am getting rid of the iron (that is in the back of the cupboard and I am not even sure where…) post haste on your timely warning. Wrinkles are the new black I hear. Bugger on karma biting you too Ms Pauline. I find that it tends to bite me in tender bits whenever I deliver sage advice without first contemplating how it might just figure in my own life situation. I tend not to give advice anymore. No point, I have decided that I know sweet bugger all to be honest and what I do know, amounts to things like “how many polygon’s you need to make a hovercraft” and “if you right click without checking your tutorial you might just live to regret it…” I think that scars are a much-underrated fashion accessory, to be honest. I think that they are going to be the new ‘tattoos’ of the future. You are just getting in early to make the most of that trend. Sorry you had a sucky couple of days but you did remind me that I was going to learn to stretch and if you could point me in the direction of any information about ‘safe stretching’ I would be most happy. I doubt I would be in danger from an ironing board as we don’t own one… Swift recovery Ms Pauline. Don’t let Siddy eat that antibiotic cream…

    • You will need your iron to steam and block your reams of crochet work to make it all fit together properly. I learnt that through blogging! Yes, I am reformed in my tendency to proffer my opinion on how the rest of the world should behave. You have my permission to point that out to me should I forget again! Currently I am sporting the latest fashion eye shade colour apparently. I am most unimpressed about that as I am sure you will understand – though it is a fetching shade of pinky purple – probably mulberry is the best fit description – though I notice too it is darkening rapidly [I just checked] . However, being on just the one eye, said eye of which is rapidly disappearing beneath the swelling, doesn’t really do much to up my street cred at all. The best way to do ‘safe stretching’ is far away from falling objects. When that necessity is seen to we can begin ……

      Liked by 1 person

      • Point taken about the stretching and what about ‘launching objects?” Earl tends to get excited whenever anyone gets down on his level so goodness only knows how dangerous it would be to lay down on the ground. I dare say I would have 4 size “E” dog prints on my prone belly in no time. Mulberry is a rather fetching colour. I haven’t seen it of late as our little mulberry tree only sports red and green fruit as the blackbirds police it meticulously and anything other than green or red disappears. All I know about ‘mulberry’ is the colour that ends up on our deck steps and that’s been through a birds digestive tract so I doubt it maintains that ‘vibrancy’ of the original colour… Stick an oversized turban on your head and pretend you are Heddy Lamar with it draped down over your wounded ocular region. There is always a fix…you just gotta be willing to entertain it ;).

        Like

        • I find the ‘launching objects’ quite an incentive to get through the stretches quickly. As you will have noticed, there was one puppy launch very early in my routine that was a bit painful, so one needs to be alert. Heavier launched objects are to be avoided due to the nature of intestinal rupturing etc which is not a good thing! I would suggest a floor being utilised which has a closed door between you and any potential launching missiles.

I quite like the thought of a Hedy Lamaresque headwear arrangement. I’ll see what I can come up with…..

  21. I’m so thankful that dreadful piece of machinery did not take out your sense of humor, Pauline. You’ve got an extra eye for backup, but only one funny bone. Whew.
And I hope the ER doc gave you a physician’s note that you can present to your insurance company that will now state taking all your ironable clothing to the dry cleaners is a must, as ironing is a danger to your health.
Whenever I’d complain to my dad about being out of sorts as a kid, he’d always come back with, “Well, it’s better than a sharp stick in the eye, ain’t it?” I suppose that could have applied here.
I do hope you’ll feel better soon. I’m sending a warm internet hug of ‘get better quick.’ Maybe the squishable Siddy can deliver it on my behalf?
    Cheers

    • Ha! ‘Woman has iron confiscated due to inappropriate use’ What is really amusing now is dealing with all the aghast glances as people see the glaringly obvious bandage and red/black eye and wonder who hit her? Do you think it would add fuel to the fire to say I walked into a door knob?

I did receive a couple of quizzical looks when an explanation was first required at ER and I said ‘the iron fell on me’ The trauma nurse had the presence of mind to ask ‘And what were you doing when the iron leapt off the shelf and hit you on the head?’ By the time I had finished the story all heads were turned my way and an attentive audience of ER patients and trauma staff were hanging onto every word…….. I have joined the ignominious statistics of 85% of all accidents happen in the home.

Well, hardly ever and certainly not at home!😄I understand there is a Talk Like a Pirate Day in September sometime. Pauline, I’m relieved to hear that you didn’t damage your eye or eye socket but so sorry to hear of this ordeal. I’m pleased to hear that you were able to reach your daughter in short order, and that she got you safely to the urgent care faciclity. • Dear wee Siddy – he means well but it is always about him and I believe he may have been on his way to get his ‘fetch’ toy to join him on his chair. and tangled himself in the iron cord on the way past. I would never have imagined an iron could hurt like that and with some time having past I realise it was no wonder I didn’t know what had happened as it really felt like something large and very heavy had fallen a great distance to land on the side of my head. I thought the ceiling had fallen in 🙂 I am very fortunate in both my girls – Poor ED, 800 km away, read the blog post and rang immediately as she knew nothing about it until publication. I hate worrying her! Personally I think this story is just indicative of my life – I needed a wake up call as I had fallen off centre and wasn’t quite properly myself and couldn’t find a way to get back in. Now I am fully awake! 🙂 Life is good!

      • Though I’m glad you are fully awake, I do wish the wake up had been less dramatic. An injury like that is traumatic. I know you’ve been through worse. My hope this is the last of this sort of thing. Sending the biggest, longest hug your way and many an ice pack too for good measure.

    • Wasn’t I fortunate? As everyone keeps saying the alternatives were death or blindness 🙂 Way to make a gal feel better! I am good as gold this morning – sporting my lovely purple eye …….

  32. HUGE CWTCH and hope you feel better soon. Did similar, not putting hot iron away and it fell on my hand, have a lovely v shaped scar to remind me of the error of my ways! Always time to put an iron away 😉

    • Thank you Anne – all hugs are welcomed here 🙂 Yes, lesson learned, iron is away though ironing board remains up as the mittens have to be unpinned from their shaping process and yesterday I just wasn’t up for it. But ironing board will be down and away before any further lying about on floors and waving legs in air takes place!! 🙂

  33. Oh my God!!!! it could have been so much worse (not to say it wasn’t horrendous” I am so glad you are OK (well reasonably OK) or at least you will eventually be OK. <3. As an aside Privite Siddy looks very dashing. ps. I used to work with a woman without a sense of humor who would always say "arrgh, exercise be bad for the 'ealth" . LOL! 😀

    • Yes, I may just take this as the excuse not to do my stretches any more – but then my hip and lower back gets sore, so what’s a gal to do? Ha – Private Siddy! What a good name. Wouldn’t it be cool if I could get him a little army hat? Except I’m a Pacifist so that won’t do ….. Oh well, maybe he isn’t……. xoxo

      • ps. My boy is a serious gymnast and he says stretches are the most important part of body fitness. Stretches are good! (except when irons and well intentioned cute little dogs enter the mix) 😀

  34. I hate to say this but as I was reading, I knew what was coming. Just not the form it was coming in. I knew the iron was going to play a part but I was so afraid the iron was going to fall on Siddy. I’m ashamed to say I’m glad it wasn’t him. He’s so small. I’m also glad you have your girls close enough to help and that hopefully no permanent damage to your eye. You were so fortunate. Irons can do a lot of damage. We need to listen to that off feeling that I know so well. I’m hoping you are having no residual damage. Take some time to rest. We’ll be waiting for the post you didn’t get to write. I’m so sorry you had this happen to you.

    • It wasn’t Siddy who needed the wake up call Marlene, so he was always safe! I am really fortunate that my life is arranged these days to deliver quickly and efficiently the necessary messages to get my act together. Millimetres either side of the actual landing place would have been eyeball or temple – take your pick, which would you rather have? I’m really thankful it happened as it did and I take full responsibility for the need to have the incident occur in the first place! Unsurprisingly I feel completely returned to my self today! 🙂 xoxo

      • I’m so glad to hear that you are good today. I immediately moved my iron after reading your post. Then I placed the for sale ad online for more things that are cluttering my space.
You may not think of yourself as a writer, but that post had me holding my breath as when I read a thriller. You can tell something is about to happen, but you are not sure yet what. I wouldn’t https://widgets.wp.com/notifications/1706910726#wish that on anyone. I’m thinking the Universe could have given you a gentler warning. Hugs to you my friend. I’m glad there are millimeters.

  35. Oh, Pauline, I am so sorry. I can’t even imagine how much pain an iron would inflict on one’s face! I hope you are feeling better soon and no more off days where you need to worry about what the puppy could do to you again.

    • Apparently an iron is quite a weighty instrument – who knew! Today I have a rather impressive red and purple ‘black eye’ and a deep sense of gratitude for my near escape!

        • Karma knows I’m ever so slightly dense and slow on the uptake – last time it was a fall down a full flight off concrete steps in a commercial building. She was gentler this time – and I am more ready to listen!
