Sometimes I sits and thinks
And sometimes I just sits ……
~ AA Milne
I have been contemplative for a whole month. I didn’t realise it until I arrived at the epiphany last night. I was busy telling myself to get on with ….. something, anything really. I have a dozen projects at varying stages from starting off to half way through and only one of them has made any progress in the last four weeks.
I was sitting and thinking – or just sitting. Or gardening and thinking, or just gardening.
Sometimes I was driving and thinking – but mostly just driving.
And then I was introduced to a new blog. My pal Frank held a blog party and I went along and met some lovely and interesting new folks, including Robin and I read this on her blog
I want to be magic. I want to touch the heart of the world and make it smile. I want to be a friend of elves and live in a tree. Or under a hill. I want to marry a moonbeam and hear the stars sing. I don’t want to pretend at magic any more. I want to be magic. ~ Charles de Lint
I heard myself take a sharp in-breath as I read these words and something deep, deep down inside of me sat up and smiled. I have so much magic in my life and I want to be magic too. I want to experience what it is like when I live every day looking into the world around me and seeing the magic in nature, in people, in events; knowing anything is possible and trusting in it and keeping that in the fore-front of my mind. It is time, said the deep-down, smiling some-one, to stand up and be counted; to put your money where your mouth is; to walk the talk and live in the trust. It is time to put aside all doubt, all fear and celebrate what you know to be true. Life is a miracle and it works in you and through you and is found in every one and everything – the seen and the unseen! I know these things, I just don’t always allow myself to live in them and with them.
I went to bed and slept fitfully. My head and heart were tingling with excitement and possibilities and newness and potential and wonder. Somewhere during the night I realised I had been sitting and thinking and sometimes just sitting, letting everything settle and just be, because now was the right time to simply live in the magic. And, as always, someone else had to proffer me the way forward. Alys had asked me if I thought procrastination was sometimes a cover for fear. “It’s always a cover for fear!” I had replied and heard myself. Thank you Frank, thank you Robin and thank you Alys!
And did you notice, right there we had an example of magic in action!
I have been learning a poem. Inspired by my friend Christi who taught herself a multi-layered, beautiful poem in three short weeks, I blundered about picking and discarding and not quite finding the right one until another blogging friend, Kerry, posted this on her site
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of linnet’s wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds from the shore;
While I stand on the road way, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.
~ WB Yeats
When I first heard this poem spoken, many years ago now, I wept. For me, the perennial gypsy, it has always represented my longed for home, my safe haven – my place on earth. Now I have learned it and say it to myself many times a day and let it be part of me along with the new acceptance of magic.
I am ready to begin work again! And this morning, just to solidify the whole deal with another sprinkle of serendipitous magic my fat-bottomed friends posted a ‘Getting Fierce GOALFEST’ which I bravely/foolishly/fool-heartedly/wisely/positively/magically joined in with and vowed – VOWED – to complete the mixed media painting that has been languishing around in the art room and various other rooms of the house for some three months and which is destined for my dear friend, the lovely Alys. I have until the end of the month………
The lovely Orlando is recovering well from a bout of spray poisoning which included a quite spectacular bout of projectile vomiting. The lovely Siddy is off getting his first hair cut – and incidentally only his second adventure sans mumma ever. I wonder how he is doing, but I did get this post up and out in record time without him!
And to finish, here are a few more shots of Siddy helping with the gardening.
Thanks for coming by today, I love that you did 🙂
The magic of it all! A lovely post.
I have loved that Yeats poem for a long time, and it still moves me whenever I come across it. Thanks for sharing it.

Hi Lois – goodness I have completely lost track of you with your change-over. I just tracked back and see you have moved and the new place is almost finished! Congratulations on it all – I hope you are feeling happy with how everything has gone. O is fine again – and yes, it is never nice to see your pets suffer and worse when you know it is because someone doesn’t believe their choices harm them. I just have to stay positive about my boys health 🙂

Just so glad I went backwards to see if I had missed a post. This is lovely. I would give myself a break, though! You were gardening and enjoying the summer time, along with maybe feeling like you were ‘on vacation’ from writing. I am so glad another blogger, (nice name, ha ha!) got you spurred on with Yeats and her own personal magical poem. I loved this description of how she would spread magic, feel magical!

Yeats and A.A. Milne… fine choices of words of wisdom and light. My Mom liked the days when memorization was part of the curriculum. She can still recite poems and passages of books, but forgets (3 x or more) that she watered the same indoor plant, until it spills on the carpet. I am smiling not complaining. The Light Brigade and poems of oceans are her favorites, recently.

Just stopping by, my Mom got up for Sunday breakfast, (she and one of my brothers are ‘night owls,’ in our family.) Anyway, she absolutely loves your Siddy photos! Pauline, I went back and showed her your puppy photos, too! The time when Orlando was watching silly Siddy take out his toys, growl and shake them, trying to get him off his haughty perch, to come and play! So adorable! Take care and appreciate your thoughtful comment, along the way this week!

I am in love with that glorious poem. It calls out and tenderly lures the gypsy in us all with it’s siren song. Lovely stuff Ms Pauline and if you are going to wrack your brains over a memorising task, what a beautiful reason to wrack…Earl says “gud unya Sudi eet podz aye du tu” yeah, “Yu du tu” alright sunshine! We had…I say “had” in HUGE inverted comma’s there, a large stack of used pots that we had been meaning to move to the shed…now we have a lot of plastic all over the new enclosure…sigh…Siddy looks scrumptious with no eyes. How on EARTH did he manage to find his way around with all that fluff in front of his orbital region?! Spray poisoning? Poor Orlando! 😦 I hope all of that projectile vomiting solved the problem but I bet you were worried as hell. Hugs to you Ms Pauline on your internal journey and your external “doing” I admire someone who can get up and attm. My up and attm is focused on the garden at the moment. Again, I adore that poem. It is soul food 🙂

I am glad you love that poem too – I have always liked it, but having lived with it and learnt it by heart I am totally in love with it now! There is a new liveliness in my heart which I am sure this poem and it’s images has put there 🙂
Plastic pots and pottles are a great favourite of young Siddy – he now upends and scours the recycling bin for anything that might possibly be chewable or edible or playable with in the way of plastic pottles………. I am beginning to feel obliged to find more plastic as I don’t actually have that much around. I suppose it is helpful for the recycling effort – the plastic is greatly reduced in mass and sometimes disappears altogether …… oh dear!
I am a little upset with my ‘neighbour’ [I put that in quotations as there is nothing neighbourly in what he does] as I have asked him not to spray on my part of the property and also to warn me when he intends to spray so I can keep Orlando inside. But he doesn’t follow either request and my poor boy gets quite sick from his poison. I am relieved when he throws up as he clears his system out and has a good sleep and gets better. This one was quite spectacular though. Luckily I was aware he wasn’t feeling too good and was keeping an eye on him and got him to the bath tub in time – I was really really glad he was in the tub!! 🙂 He is back on form now.
I see you are enjoying your garden [and working so hard – much admiration!] My little effort pales in comparison, but I am already picking spinach and lettuce leaves for my evening salad 🙂 Love it!

This is such a moving post. I love that the way forward has opened up to you. And by the way, I think that both reading and writing blogs can help open one’s mind to the magic around us. I remember Lucy (Attic24) talking about how much more aware she is of the changing seasons and colours since she started blogging. That’s a wonderful thing, surely? On a more sober note, I’m sorry that Orlando has been so ill. Big hugs to him from afar, although I’m sure his feline dignity would prevent him from accepting them. And please tell Siddy that he has a big fan in rural Oxfordshire.

I agree totally – every person who influenced me through this latest episode is a blogger, I think that is pure magic! Orlando is accepting hugs from everyone these days, so have no fear of rejection. Siddy takes it for granted that everyone loves him – doesn’t occur to him that they would not. Isn’t that an amazing way to be?

I actually think the time I ‘just sit and think’ is rather time well spent. Maybe we don’t have to be productive at every turn. Maybe just soaking in what we’ve built so far is important. It’s a good to rejuvenated sometimes. That being said, nice to set goals. Knowing you’re going to arrive somewhere’s spectacular makes the trip so much more fun.

I agree that sitting and thinking and contemplating is important for us all . . . but then it’s time to move ahead. I find, for myself, that getting started is the most difficult part. It’s that whole thing about an object at rest staying at rest. Once I BEGIN, I keep moving. And Yeats reminds us that we have to GO to get to Innisfree–it won’t come to us.

Max is big – about 12kg I think. We used to have a terrier x Shi-Tzu and she was about half the size… and much less naughty! Max is white and tan, but when he’s had his hair done he looks rather like a Moomin and very camp… and then we refer to him as the Snork Maiden! I have to say that he has got better over the years about being groomed – he’s nine now and we’ve had him seven years – but he was maltreated as a pup (he came from a rescue) so goodness knows what trauma he’s had in his background.

When I got to the paragraph that ended with the line “I know these things, I just don’t always allow myself to live in them and with them” I jumped up, pumped a fist in the air and yelled “YES!” We definitely need to be more intentional about acknowledging/embracing/celebrating the magic in our lives as well as in our splendid selves!
And I may be a bit biased, but I think it was BRAVE to take the VOW – because we both know that making that public declaration will obligate you to do what you’ve been wanting to do in a finite period of time. I’m looking forward to celebrating your finished piece and my well-oiled, well-ridden bike at the end of the month!!

Yay for Orlando. Yes, I think there may be a bit of flat lining going on and the realization that I can’t do it all this summer. Trying to push through has caused an exacerbation of the dizziness. Going for a massage tomorrow. They are essential to my health. 🙂 I realized I made outrageous lists of things to do and totally overwhelmed myself. So now the downtime lets me put what must be done and what can wait into perspective. I know you are doing the same. Hugs to you and chin scratches to your furry family..

I hope you are feeling better now Marlene and still taking it easy on yourself! I am ‘up and at ’em’ as we say down here as I had been quietly observing my navel for almost too long 🙂

Yes indeed – it is good to out yourself publicly and feel bound to the commitment when procrastination has the upper hand, don’t you think? Orlando is almost 100% again and Siddy has returned half the size he was and twice as gorgeous! Thank you for coming by 🙂
